How to Build a Compost Bin
How to Build a Compost Bin
Do you have a garden, or grass? Well, if you do, you should have a compost pile. Compost is soil that has a mix, from old fruit peels to old vegetables, kitchen waste and water. Many people may use compost piles as a means for fertilizer.
There are different types of compost bins that can be made but the majority is made from old wooden pallets and mesh wire. A normal compost bin would be around 2-3 feet in height and 2 feet in width, again this is just a sample size and can be varied and changed to any size and shape your prefer.
If you would like to start by making a wooden pallet bin, here are some materials you will need.
Wooden pallets
Screws/nails
Bolts
Latches or joist
Here are some of the simple steps that need to be done to build a compost bin.
Step one: Determine what kind of compost bin you would like, once this has been done you can now decide how large you would like it to be.
Step two: 3 feet worth of wooden pallets is around an estimate of 4-5 pallets. Take these pallets and begin to nail them together one on top of the other.
Step three: Take an electric saw and cut out the inside wood boards in the pallets, creating an opening at the top and leaving the bottom uncut and creating a hollow inside.
Step four: Take your screws and latches and secure the outer corners of the 3 foot stacked pallet compost bin by latching them to each other. You will need to do this to all of the layers one by one.
Step five: Make sure you have screws that are long enough to drill into the wood pallet to the next layer up, as this will be your means for extra support as the bin gets full.
A wise tip that should be taken into account would be to fence the inside of your compost bin with chicken wire to keep any rodents from running in and out. Also, line your bin with plastic to keep your compost moist, and this is what is necessary to ensure maximum strength compost fertilizer.
As you can imagine, this can be a very easy task and can be managed very easily by one person, once these steps have been put into play, your compost bin will be ready for use.
