How to Climb a Ladder
There are numerous chores that would require a person to climb up wall using a ladder. The only problem is, if not done correctly, you’ll end up slipping and falling. Instead of putting yourself at risk of breaking your neck, you should learn how to use and climb a ladder properly and safely. Here’s what to do.
What You’ll Need:
Extension ladder
Ladder accessories
Procedure:
Check and make sure that your ladder is in good condition. If not, it’s better to borrow another one. You should also check that the wall where you’re going to put it is sturdy enough to hold the ladder and your weight.

Set the ladder against the wall, placing it at a proper angle. When you stand in front of it, the ladder should create a right triangle form from the side view. If too angled, it might bend or the bottom could slide out. If placed too steep, the ladder might tip over backward.
Check that the feet of the ladder doesn’t slip backwards. If the ladder is on hard wooden surfaces, like a deck, you can screw down a cleat. If it’s on soft ground (grass or soil), you can flip up the ladder shoes so the spurs are poking in the ground.
Make sure the feet of the ladder are level and will not tip sideways.
Look up at the top of the ladder. Make sure its top rests on a flat surface, and won’t wobble or slide when you put weight against it.
Stabilizing the top of the ladder is a great idea, especially if you’re going to be at the top for a long time. Slip plastic or rubber mitts over the top of the rails to give a good grip on the siding and protect it from damage. Stabilizers are also great.
Start climbing. When you do this, grab on to the rungs securely, putting one hand over the other, Don’t let go of one rung until you’ve grabbed the next. Sliding your hands can be hazardous, since your grasp isn’t as secure as you need it to be.
Put your foot carefully on every rung. Make sure the middle part, and not the edge, are touching the rung. Don’t wear slippery footwear when doing this.
When you’re reaching for something to the side of the ladder and you can’t get to it, don’t lean sidewards. Instead, go down and lift and move the ladder.
If you’re done, climb down the ladder, then fold it down again. If the ladder has been fully-extended, lower it first. It can be very heavy and you might lose control of it.
Ladders are efficient, but always use one with caution. Keep these easy steps in mind as you climb one, so you’ll be able to finish whatever chores you need to.
