How to Install a Doorbell
Doorbells are handy installations to have in the house, alerting you if there’s a guest or visitor on your front step. It can become damaged over time, though and you need to know how to properly replace it, otherwise, it won’t work up to your expectations. Here’s how to install a new doorbell properly.
What You’ll Need:
New doorbell
Screwdriver
Wire cutter
Wire stripper
Circuit tester
Procedure:
Before doing any installation, make sure the power going to the doorbell is off. Turn off the breaker that supplies power to it. While most doorbells only run on 12 volts and doesn’t cause much danger, it’s still a good idea to take this precaution.
Take away the cover of your old doorbell unit. Most designs usually have plastic clips on the bottom and top that snaps off easily.
Remove the switch carefully from beside the door. You’ll need a screwdriver for this task. Afterwards, take away the mounting screws, then gently pull the wires and switch away from the hole where the wires exit the house. If you want, you can use a circuit tester to make sure the power is off.
Sometimes, doorbell wires show signs of corrosion. If you notice this, just use a wire cutter to cut off the ends. Afterwards, use a wire stripper to expose the fresh wire.
Take note of which screw goes to which wires. They usually have labels, such as F for Front, B or R for rear door and T for Transformer. Secure the wires, making sure they won’t slide and accidentally disappear into the hole.
Remove the wire from the doorbell switch. Then, remove the entire unit from the wall.
Get the new doorbell and check if it covers the same portion on the wall as the previous one. If not, you’ll need to do a few touch ups before pushing through with the installation.
Put the back plate of the new doorbell against the door. Pull the wires properly through it first.
Carefully connect the wires to the proper terminals, making sure you take note which one goes where. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws.
Put the new cover on and attach it properly. Turn the breaker on again, to bring back power to the doorbell. Test and see if the doorbell rings. If it does, then the installation is complete.
Hearing a nice “ding dong!” every time someone comes to visit, is something any homeowner wants. Just follow these steps and your new doorbell will be well-functional all the time.
