How to Install Replacement Windows
First think of the style, material and type of window you want. Consider these before you replace your old one. There is a wide range of replacement windows you can choose from.
You can select from vinyl, composite or wood. These come in various styles. Examples would be the single hung, double hung, or the casement
Make the measurements once you have made your selection. Measure the exact height and width of your old windows. The width should be measured from one jamb(vertical side of the window) to the other.
Take the measurement from the top to the bottom of the window. This is for measuring the height. Measure the height in the left side, in the middle and the right side. Utilizing the smallest measurements on the tape measure would ensure the right fit for the window frame.
Order the replacement window once you have finished measuring. You can call a window dealer or buy online. You can also visit a hardware store for this.
It is imperative you check the windowsill. A bad frame will not hold the replacement window well. The frame should free from any bit of wood rot. It should also be solid.
You can then remove your inside stops. These are connected to your old window. This should be done very carefully.
The window sashes should also be removed. Cut the nails that hold the sashes. Clean the frame. Old caulks and nails are also removed.
The new one can be placed once the old window has been removed. Check if the new window fit right into the opening. Place it in the frame and see if it fits.
Remove the old window. The next step is to run a caulk. You can also run a sealant on the inner edge of the outside part of the window stops. Put some sealant on the windowsill as well.
You can place your new window when you are done putting sealant. This is placed in the centre of the window frame. Check it if it is plumb, fits perfectly and square. Keep the window in place by using some shim.
You can then insert the inside stops. Secure this with nails that measure one and one-half inches. Caulk and seal the stops, meeting the frame in place.
Look at the outer part of the window. Check if the window has a sloped frame. This should match the slope of your window sill.
Check also for an insert. This is utilized to cover and seal the gap. Use a bit of wood to cover the gap if there’s no insert. The last step is to caulk and seal the seams. This is done on the part where the insert goes next to the frame.
