Yeah, I talk to myself all the time. Frequently I’m rehearsing an upcoming conversation with somebody which has some anxiety attached to it. Or I’m re-running a situation that could have worked out better. It took me a year or so before I screwed up the courage to ask my shrink about it. He just chuckled and said that as long as I don’t think they are answering me back or that they are really there, then it’s perfectly normal. This was over 20+years ago and I’ve been talking to myself whenever the need arises. But I do get strange looks sometimes :) The other thing I get strange looks about seems perfectly normal to me. I do part time work as a face painter and ballon sculptor. Many times I’m dressed as my clown character. Sometimes if it’s been a really long and busy day, I haven’t had a chance to eat or anything. Rather than go all the way back home, I’ll stop off (usually at an informal type of Chinese restaurant) to get a bite to eat, use the restroom and get off my aching feet. I do get some really strange looks, but hey, clowns have to eat too, right ? All in all, I’m a pretty odd duck but I don’t spend my life worrying about what others think. Besides, my shrink pronounced me sane, so I’m good. Don’t worry Chuck, you’re perfectly ok. And FYI he also told me that creative people are the ones who most frequently talk to themselves. As long as it’s not a hallucination, you’re good to go. Extremely unlikely to “go postal.” :D
