Basic Elliptical Machine RoutineThe Ironman brand of elliptical trainers encompasses a wide range of different units. There are really two different lines, one of which uses a traditional front drive system for resistance, and a second type that uses a center drive for resistance. Regardless of what type of drive the elliptical trainer has, the Ironman brand is known for the extreme durability of their machines. Beyond the quality construction, different units have been met with varying degrees of acceptance largely due to some non-traditional designs that can make some of the elliptical trainers difficult to use for certain individuals. The main feature of Ironman elliptical trainers is the solid construction. The frame, the drive, and the pedals are all constructed from steel and formed in a way that gives each unit an uncommon amount of strength. This can be seen when comparing the maximum supported weight of some of the models, which can easily exceed 300 pounds. The solid construction of the trainers means that they will be able to endure long and frequent workout routines and stay in good working condition for many years. Many of the Ironman elliptical trainers feature a center drive mechanism. This means that the resistance is generated in the center of the unit. An electromagnetic engine helps to create a quiet environment, although Ironman machines are not as quiet as some others. The Ironman center drive is also called a side drive because the resistance motors are not between the pedals, but are located on the outer sides of the machine. The advantage is that each pedal can be individually configured for different levels of resistance. The drawback is that the machine has a wide footprint, and the pedals are spaced closer together than normal. There have been many design tradeoffs with the Ironman line of elliptical trainers. The machines are very sleek and attractive looking and most have a very small footprint and are lightweight. This is achieved by placing the foot pedals closer together and, in some cases, reducing the stride length. Alternately, center drive units can have very long stride lengths that might not be comfortable for smaller individuals. With the variety of Ironman elliptical trainers available, the key to finding one that works is to test them in person.
