How to Cook a Lobster
Eager to have a succulent and classy seafood dinner? Well then, serve delicious lobster to your guests! It’s a great meal, as long as you know how to cook it properly. Here’s how to properly cook lobster.
What You’ll Need:
Fresh lobsters
Cooking tongs
Salt
Large pot
Salt
Water
Butter
Procedure:
Go to the supermarket and purchase several large lobsters from the seafood section. It seems cruel, but lobsters have to be cooked alive because of two reasons: first, because their meat is tender and fresh, and second, because cooking dead lobsters isn’t healthy. Their blood contains copper, and when the lobster dies before cooking, the copper turns to copper oxide, which can be poisonous.
When you buy lobsters, find out their weight, so you’ll know how long the cooking time will be.
Get your large pot. It should be big enough to fit a lobster, and still leave enough space. Fill 3/4 of the pot with water. Turn the heat on high, then allow the water to boil. Put the lid on.
For every quart that you placed in the pot, add one tablespoon of salt.
Claws first, carefully put the lobsters in the boiling water. This can be a very tricky part and a lot of people don’t like to do this. Ask for help if you think you can’t manage this. Check that the lobster is fully submerged.
If you don’t want to boil the lobster, you can steam them. Just put in 1 1/2 inches of salty water, then cover. When the water boils, put the lobster on the steamer tray. The cover must be air tight.
The cooking time for lobsters depends on their weight. For a 1 to 11/4 pound lobster, cooking time will be between five to eight minutes. Those heavier than 1 1/4 pounds should be cooked for more than 10 minutes.
Turn off the heat, then remove the cooked lobster from the water using kitchen tongs. Serve it immediately with melted butter, or the meat becomes tough.
Some Tips
If you think putting live lobsters in the pot is too cruel, one humane, but safe tactic is to freeze them for a couple of minutes before submerging them in the boiling water.
Live lobsters are best when they’re in season, and in many places this range between September to February.
