How to Install a Deadbolt
Safety and security are important concerns for homeowners. Many locks and other security systems are now available from supermarkets and hardware supply stores. While you may be wowed by many of the cool security devices available from hardware stores, your security needs can be easily solved with a simple deadbolt.
Tools
To install a deadbolt, you need the following tools:
Deadbolt. A deadbolt set comes with the actual deadbolt, a catch, and a set of screws. For cupboards, drawers, and other small doors, a small deadbolt works fine. For rooms and main doors, you need to buy a larger deadbolt.
Screwdriver. Always check the type of screw the deadbolt set uses. Most deadbolts come with cross-head screws, although smaller deadbolts sometimes come with flat-head screws. For large deadbolts, you may also need a punch or a hand-drill to make pilot holes for the screws.
Measuring tools. You will also need a measuring tape and a pencil to properly install the deadbolt.
Steps
Follow these steps to install the deadbolt:
Deadbolts should always be placed a few inches above the doorknob, while the bottom of the door is secured by a stopper. Six to eight inches above the doorknob is a good place to position the deadbolt.
Dry-fit the catch and bolt, and mark the position for the pilot holes. Remember that the bolt assembly is fitted on the door, and the catch is fitted on the jamb.
Make the pilot holes with a punch or a drill.
Start by fitting the deadbolt on the door. Make sure that the catching end of the deadbolt is flush with the edge of the door. Attach the bolt assembly securely with screws.
Once you have attached the bolt assembly on the door, fit and attach the catch on the door jamb. You may need to test the fit of the bolt with the catch to ensure that the bolt mechanism works properly.
Make pilot holes, and secure the catch on the door jamb.
Deadbolts may seem like simple locks, but they can be an effective deterrent against forced entry and theft. With these steps, you can install deadbolts on every door in your home.
