Why is NH3 called Lewis Alkali ?

1 Answer

Answer :

According to the Lewis theory of acid-base, all the compounds that can give electrons to protons are called bases. The compounds containing mainly free electrons behave like Lewis alkalis. The nitrogen of NH 3 contains free pairs of electrons so it can donate a pair of electrons to protons. That is why it is called Lewis alkali.

Description : Which of NH3 and HCl has higher prevalence rate and why ?

Last Answer : By the rate of diffusion of an object, we mean how much the object has spread through any medium at any given time. The lower the density of an object, the lower the molecular mass, the higher the rate of diffusion ... ( 36.5) is high. Thus the rate of diffusion of NH 3 is higher than that of HCl .

Description : Why NH3 has a higher boiling point than CH4 and HCl?

Last Answer : Both NH3 and HCl exhibit hydrogen bonding as intermolecularforces, whereas CH4 does not. This makes CH4 have a lower boilingpoint. Since there are 3 hydrogen atoms in NH3 and only 1 inHCl(g), the intermolecular forces would be expected to be greaterin NH3 than in HCl.
