Discuss what is the difference between an “open” system versus a “closed” system and which one best reflects living things.

1 Answer

Answer :

Open system is where matter and energy can be transfered between the system and its surroundings. On the other hand, a closed system (an isolated system?!) can’t transfer energy in such a manner. The former better reflects living things than the latter, as everything in the world interacts with one another; a characteristic of all living things is that they interact with their environment.

Description : A key process in metabolism is the transport of hydrogen ions (H+) across a membrane to create a concentration gradient. Explain which arrangement of hydrogen ions (unequal concentration or equal concentration) allows work to be done.
