How will I proceed when connecting TV and PC?

I have everything ready and now I have the courage to start it. I have a chart. card with HDMI, connecting cable to TV and what next? Set up a second monitor on the PC, then switch the TV to the appropriate HDMI port, or vice versa? I'm afraid of that :)
