Cold-Fever or Common Cold is a very well known disease in Bangladesh. There are probably no people in our country who have not had a cold at least once or twice a year. People are often seen sneezing or wiping their nose in the streets , schools, colleges or offices. Rich-poor , educated-uneducated , physician-engineer, none of us is free from this disease. Even in the 21st century, we have not been able to get rid of this annoying disease. Cause: Cold-fever is a type of viral infection of the upper respiratory tract of human body. Influenza-A , influenza-B , para-influenza , adenovirus , rhinovirus etc. are responsible for this disease. In many cases it can lead to bacterial infections. The disease is more prevalent during the change of seasons. The disease is more likely to occur if there is continuous rain , damp environment , excessive heat or cold and many people live in one room. People with low immunity are also at higher risk of the disease. The disease is spread from one person to another through sneezing and coughing. Symptoms: The disease can be diagnosed by looking at the symptoms. Usually no laboratory test is required. In case of cold-fever , at first there is discomfort in the nose and throat , there is sneezing , water is constantly dripping from the nose. The nose may be closed. Symptoms include headache , heaviness of head , body aches , mild fever (not more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit) , sore throat. Sometimes the eyes may be red and watery. Treatment: It is better to rest during cold and fever. In addition to normal food, plenty of water , lemon juice , pineapple , guava or amalki can be eaten. Foods such as ice cream , fridge water , cold drinks should be avoided. Hot tea or coffee can be eaten. The treatment of this disease usually does not require antibiotics. Fever and painkillers like paracetamol and antihistamines are cured in a few days. However, if there are signs of a bacterial infection, the appropriate antibiotic should be taken in the right dose for five to seven days as advised by the doctor. As there is a risk of tonsillitis or lung infection in children, the medicine should be given as per the advice of a registered doctor. Prevention and public awareness: Caution should be exercised in dealing with others, especially children, in case of catching cold and fever. Use a handkerchief or tissue paper to wipe off sneezing or runny nose. Handkerchiefs or towels used by the patient should be avoided by others. Cough , saliva or nasal mucus should not be thrown there. Living in a healthy , open , dry environment and taking appropriate precautions in adverse environments. In order to increase public awareness, it is necessary to provide necessary health education to the general public.
