answer:I’ve a relative who acts like a hypochondriac. He is known for making sure everyone around him is aware of his ailments. Some are legit. Some, I highly doubt – but I’m not in his body, so I cannot honestly prove or deny. He spends a lot of energy paying attention to every minute detail, and has no difficulty describing any aspect of the symptoms. I’m not sure if he does this because he wants attention, or because he is obsessed with his poor health. It could be both. It is very frustrating. I would rather not have to deal with this person, but because he is family, I have no choice (well, I know I could avoid him completely, but I would feel guilty for not having a relationship with him). I try really hard not to give him too much attention when he talks about his health concerns. Even though I hardly say anything when he discusses his concerns, it doesn’t seem to stop him. Telling him or asking him point blank to stop doesn’t work either. If there is a cure for the one hearing all of this—please let me know. It doesn’t seem curable.
