How to Build a Pole Barn
How to Build a Pole Barn
One of the simplest installations that you can make in your property is a pole barn. Usually found on agricultural land, a pole barn requires very little knowledge to put up; all you really need is a basic know-how, wood and a few tools.
Materials Required
Some of the tools that you will need to use are listed here:
lumber
Digging equipment
Gravel or concrete
Poles
Roof trusses
Tin roofing sections
Straight nails
Roofing nails
Hammer
Saw
Storm clips
Find an area where you would like your pole barn to be set up. Make sure that you have enough space and adequate room available for your pole barn. Choose a level ground that does not hold water, as you will not want this area to flood.
Draw out your pole barn plans. You may not be the next Picasso, but it is great to have a plan and a detailed sketch of your project instead of you just rushing and diving in.
You should work in 7-8 foot sections when you are building your pole barn. Make sure to buy at least 8-foot long pieces of wood, as these would be the least expensive.
You will need a building permit to get started on your project. Make sure you acquire one beforehand.
Steps to Follow
These are the general steps on how to get started building your own backyard/land pole barn:
Step one: Dig holes for the post and place your stake in the slot corners.
Step two: A concrete base should be filled in to assure maximum support.
Step three: Brace the poles in an up-right position until they are fully secure.
Step four: Install the roof trusses.
Step five: Install the walls for your pole barn and use 2×4 braces.
Step six: Use plywood for the walls.
Step seven: Nail in the tin roof using screw-in roofing nails. Overlap short sections of the roofing, for both weather security and easy installation. Use a tin ridge cap at the peak of the roof.
When working with lumber and tools, you must be very careful, especially if you are using power tools such a power drill or saw.
