If your wife really does not have any other assets (such as cash , silver or business goods) other than 5 ounces of gold, then zakat will not be obligatory on you just because of that gold. Because zakat on gold is obligatory only for the owner of seven and a half loads of gold . It is to be noted that if a person has some amount of gold and some amount of silver or some amount of business goods and some amount of cash and these together become equal to the value of 52.5 tola (612.36 grams) then zakat will be obligatory on him.
